Vintage
Classics
Through
the years there have been some stand-out football card
sets. Card sets that just had a great design and look
that stood out from other sets from their time. TheCowboysGuide.com
would like to profile a few sets that in our opinion have become "Vintage
Classics".

Topps
|
|
As far as
looks go, the 1962 Topps
issue ranks number one with me.
The solid black borders and short printed cards make it a
challenge to complete this set with cards in NrMt
condition. Printed horizontally from most other card
issues, these feature a color still and a black-and-white
action photo on the front. Note the three different
background colors used for the players name and team. Key Cowboys cards in the
set include:
Don Meredith (first Topps card), Don Perkins RC, Mike Connelly

Post Cereal
|
|
Simply for
the fact that these cards were found on the backs of Post
Cereal boxes makes them interesting. The cards were
bordered by a thin black line surrounding each card.
Were they to be cut out following this line, or should the
line be visible after the cut? Left to the discretion of
the cutter, this makes it quite difficult to find consistency
between cards. And to top it off, some brands of Post
Cereal were not as popular as others so fewer boxes of those
varieties were printed. Rare in deed are the complete back panels!

1969
Topps
|
|
Bright
colored backgrounds distinguish this set from the average
football card. Released in two series (1-132 and
133-263) this set has multiple personalities. The first
series is borderless while the second added a white
border. It is unknown why Topps decided to change the
look in mid-production. Perhaps the bordered style was
the intention initially and the entire first series is in
error. "Cowboy Joe" makes an
appearance on the fronts of these beauties. Key Cowboys
cards in the set include: Lance Rentzel RC, Dave Edwards RC
